BUDDHIST PILGRIMAGE

Lord Buddha has stated in Mahaparinibbana Sutta, delivered by him in Kushinagar that

(1). The place where he was born i.e. Lumbini
(2). The place where he attained the enlightenment i.e. Buddhagaya
(3). The place where he delivered the first sermon i.e. Sarnath and
(4). The place where he entered into Mahaparinirvana i.e. Kushinagar.
are places which can bring about feelings of religious awe & reverence & are therefore worthy places of pilgrimage for those who believe in Him

"These, Ananda, are the four places that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence. And truly there will come to these places, Ananda, pious bhikkhus and bhikkhunis, laymen and laywomen, reflecting: 'Here the Tathagata was born! Here the Tathagata became fully enlightened in unsurpassed, supreme Enlightenment! Here the Tathagata set rolling the unexcelled Wheel of the Dhamma! Here the Tathagata passed away into the state of Nibbana in which no element of clinging remains!'

"And whoever, Ananda, should die on such a pilgrimage with his heart established in faith, at the breaking up of the body, after death, will be reborn in a realm of heavenly happiness."

Four Places of Pilgrimage

"There are four places, Ananda, that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence. What are the four?

"'Here the Tathagata (Buddha) was born!' (Refers to Lumbini Buddha's Birth Place) This, Ananda, is a place that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.

"'Here the Tathagata became fully enlightened in unsurpassed, supreme Enlightenment! (Refers to Bodh Gaya buddha's place of Enlightenment) , Ananda, is a place that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.

"'Here the Tathagata set rolling the unexcelled Wheel of the Dhamma! (Refers to Sarnath where buddha gave his first Sermon), Ananda, is a place that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.

"'Here the Tathagata passed away into the state of Nibbana in which no element of clinging remains!' (Refers to Kushinagar) This, Ananda, is a place that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.

"These, Ananda, are the four places that a pious person should visit and look upon with feelings of reverence.
